5.0 out of 5 starsThis amazing, concise book is the best thing I’ve read (Verified Purchase) This amazing, concise book is the best thing I’ve read on how to audition effectively. When faced with the vacuum of the audition room, it is essential for an actor to have a set of logical, usable tools that will make it possible to give an inspired audition. Holly has given us these tools in her book, as well as some fun inside stories of what happens in a casting session. The Audition Bible: Secrets Every Actor Needs To Know is aptly named as it provides and reminds actors at any level of experience just what they need to do as they prepare for an audition and once they are actually auditioning. It can be a strange, scary world, but Holly has shown a light on the process and stated precisely what the actor needs to know in an easy-to-read or reference format. Whatever you are auditioning for, you will find tons of helpful advise in this book. Thanks Holly!

5.0 out of 5 starsA Bible for Actors I was a successful working actress in Hollywood for twenty years between the mid-60s and the mid-80s. I worked under the name Hilarie Thompson. It was a long time ago, but I think I know Hollywood, and I think I know acting. Sometimes I wonder if I would have become a movie star if I had had Holly Powell’s book! She deals with two things in this book – The audition and acting.

So often the nerves involved in auditioning and all the unanswered questions about the process will muddle and disturb our reason for being there – to act! Did I wear the right outfit? Is that other girl waiting to audition better for the part than I am? Should I use props? Should I wear the same outfit on a callback? Should I use costumes? Should I stand? Should I sit? Should I say hello to the casting director as if she were my friend? Should I take my time before I begin to read or will I be wasting their time? Should I chat? Should I kiss the other actor if the script calls for it? In Holly Powell’s book all of these questions are answered succinctly by a woman who knows who spent 20 years as a casting director in Hollywood. Not only does Holly give you the answers to these practical questions, but she also tells you how to actually act!

I have read every acting book ever written from Stanislavski to Chekov to Uta Hagen, and the list goes on. Am I actually now going to say that Holly Powell’s book has been more inspirational that any of these others? Yes, I am. The simplicity with which Holly lays out the process is remarkable. Sense of place, relationship, intention, listen. What else does one need? Holly Powell’s book will be a tremendous help to any actor however young, however old, however green, or however seasoned.

5.0 out of 5 starsA MUST-READ for actors You’ll come to find out when you start auditing that it’s an entire skillset of it’s own. From the anxiety in the waiting room to the post-audition emotions… it’s not easy. There are a million things going through your head and you’ll think you’re the only one struggling to deal with them. Holly basically explains every single do, don’t, and common struggle for an actor when it comes to the process and will leave you feeling informed and confident moving forward.
This book could have saved me from a handful of terrible auditions when you find out half the battle isn’t the audition itself.

5.0 out of 5 starsBeing a great actor doesn’t mean you know how to audition and …DAMN…..WHY DIDN’T I HAVE THIS BOOK WHEN I WAS AUDITIONING EVERY DAY? Not since Michael Shurtleff’s book have I read an audition book that covers A-Z everything an actor needs to know. I am buying it to give as gifts because actors need all the help they can get. Being a great actor doesn’t mean you know how to audition, and this behind-the-scenes book tells an actor all she/he needs to know. I’ve been teaching off and on for years, and the audition process has evolved a great deal in the last few decades. There was a time when things were more personal; now it’s all up to the actor to come up with the goods. And it’s about time for an up-to-date book on all the new-fangled ways to submit yourself. And how to do it properly and successfully. Thank you, Ms. Powell, for this enlightening book.

5.0 out of 5 starsEssential Tool for All Actors (aka Auditioners) My mentor gave me Holly’s book for Christmas, and I cannot thank her enough! In The Audition Bible, Holly effectively demystifies the audition process for the actor and answers the questions that no other book out there does. It is an essential tool for all working actors at any stage in their careers. There are so many resources on the market for acting, but so few for auditioning. Holly’s book is not only a fun read from start to finish, but it is also a great source to reference for specific questions as auditions come up. I have no doubt that I will revisit the book many times this year as I prepare for different auditions! I highly recommend this title!

5.0 out of 5 starsFANTASTIC! Holly Powell conveys her love of actors FANTASTIC! Holly Powell conveys her love of actors, the craft and the art of the audition in a wonderfully organized and thoughtful book. Some of the other books I’ve read on the audition process are so time consuming and complicated that they’ve ended up being more of a distraction than an asset, especially given the short amount of time that one usually has to prepare. So, thank you, Ms. Powell. I feel as if I’ve been given a TREASURE TROVE OF SECRETS, encompassing what goes on the “other side” of the casting process, practical on-camera auditioning techniques, as well as ways to harness one’s focus and choices, before and during an audition.

5.0 out of 5 starsBrilliant and every actor should own a copy Holly Powell has unlocked the secret to successful auditioning. I have worked with actors for many years, first in a casting office for Norman Lear and then as a producer and was an actor myself early in my career. I know the angst of uncertainty that lies behind the casting doors. There is a wealth of information held in the pages, and no one has laid it out so clearly and understandably. She dismantles the fear of the unknown in the process, step by step. Brilliant and every actor should own a copy!
